VTO is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Mike Marshall this
autumn.
For this show 'Lizard Afternoons' at VTO Mike Marshall combines
a variety of different works. An evangelical text tries to persuade
us to believe in something, capital cities become photographically
abstracted into horizontal lines, ravers are caught against a watery
darkness and a video projection explores an intensely verdant garden.
In the main gallery space are two photographs from the 360º Panorama
series. Each shot is taken from the centre of a capital city by
rotating the camera full circle, all vertical lines become blurred
in this process to leave a layering of horizons.
The exhibition continues in the second gallery space where a video
projection 'days like these' shows the activity of a garden sprinkler
as it travels around a garden, water lands on leaves and flowers,
causing them to move and intensifying their colours. In this carefully
engineered patch of nature we hear the rhythmical chatter of the
sprinkler, birdsong, dogs barking. The orchestration of these sounds
provides a summery backing track to a simple and expectant musical
accompaniment that echoes through the show. What is not disclosed
is that this garden exists in the middle of a desert and is kept
alive by the calming and never ending activity of its garden sprinklers.
Next year Mike Marshall will be participating in the Tate Triennial,
Void in Yokohama, Japan and a solo show in February at Tmesis in
Manchester.
