Aarhus /daybreak/4th September 2003, this is the title of the installation presented by the young Italian artist Simona Frillici in Senko Studio. A place, a date, a precise moment of the day are the coordinates and the context the artist provides for the fragments of objects and papers raised to become the protagonists of her work. A series of refuse and wreckage of objects plus a thousand other details of things withered and worn after the rituality of a festive evening, shower the exhibition’s perimeter. Exposed and hidden at the same time, their vibrant presence displayed and yet never totally revealed, these themes of a transitory and evanescent reality speak of a transition and bring proof of the being and especially the having been of things. The material remains, in themselves only shadows of a lost completeness, are thus rendered even more incomprehensible. Sealed into a little plastic bags, their presence is enhanced but also concealed by the fragments’ outlines which the artist traces onto the wrappings in black paint. The result is the shadow of a shadow, reality’s image manipulated to abandon the schemes of recognizable concreteness and thus mark out a distance between the real thing and its double. It’s a composition that feeds on the enigmatic seduction of an intermittent and elusive presence.
