The building that now is called the Experimental Station
has been a vital cultural destination in Chicago for several decades.
In previous incarnations, it has supported a broad range of practices,
publications, community and art initiatives. The interior was destroyed
by a fire one year ago leaving a brick wall framing 10,000 square
feet. Official reports blame the fire on tenant's neglegence, though
many are convinced that it was arson. The ensuing struggle with
the City of Chicago's corrupt permit office has frozen plans to
move forward. The Experimental Station sits half in ruin and half
in anticipation as the fight to rebuild continues.
Chicago has a long history of paid arsonists in collusion with city
officials and aggressive developers. The history of this practice
and its role in gentrification is all too painfully chronicled in
a mural, possibly from the mid 70s, a block away from the Experimental
Station. The mural depicts a community coming together to fight a
dog-faced arsonist, with money in his pocket, and the greed he represents.
The need to have freedom to determine how your neighborhood is simultaneously
being played out at a nearby lakefront landmark fondly known as
the point.. A coalition of Hyde Park residents have formed to keep
irresponsible lake shore development from ruining a beautiful park.
LAND is a project initiated by the Scandinavian collective N55.
There are currently two pieces of LAND in the Chicago area: one
in Oak Park and a recently added chunk in Hyde Park. LAND defies
what most people think of property relationships. Property ownership
is used to do the opposite: free up the land and make it a common
space. The owners of a piece of property put it into LAND and guarantee
its open use. This project is growing with over ten parcels of LAND
in multiple countries.
Public Planning celebrates the long history of the Experimental
Station and insists that it continue even in the face of uncertainty.
Public Planning connects the struggle at the Experimental Station
to that at the Point and in other cities in the U.S. and abroad.
These struggles are becoming all to common in large cities. People
are fighting to preserve their neighborhoods or to build new situations
within them in interesting and creative ways. Some just insist on
having open ended places where they can explore their ideas. This
is at the heart of the Experimental Station and it is necessary
that it continues.
