Sparwasser HQ is a non profit platform for artist curated projects,
with collaborative and discursive research as a first priority.
Sparwasser HQ is working with a continually changing idea of "exhibition"
practice, building up a laboratory of ideas for art workers and
their audience and establishing a network between people.
At the ART FORUM BERLIN, Sparwasser transfers the focus from the
purely visual to the production of dialogue. Involving the public,
we work with inclusive and democratic strategies, discussing themes
of migration, nationality and autonomous art production. Using the
ART FORUM BERLIN to create a place for the development of new works,
collaborations, and thoughts, Sparwasser HQ profits from participating
in the fair through communication and contact with an international
audience. It is our goal to meet the people and institutions connected
to Sparwasser during the past two years through our newsletter and
the information available on our web page.
Sparwasser HQ has invited three artists to collaborate on the creation
of our stand at the ART FORUM BERLIN: LISE HARLEV, COLONEL & KARL
HOLMQVIST
LISE HARLEV's contribution, "Everything for the first time",
consisting of 12 posters, combines the aesthetics of public posters
with subjective statements. Through quotes such as "Living abroad
often causes you to feel a little left out" and "The fact that you
don´t run into people from your past when you are abroad can be
a relief," LISE HARLEV reflects on the ambiguity of moving abroad
and being a foreigner. She recently participated in Manifesta 4
and in BIG Torino 2002.
Against the backdrop of contemporary migration within Europe, both
HARLEV and COLONEL investigate different ways of dealing
with national and cultural identities and power structures. By undermining
the stability of identity, their works render visible certain social
and cultural dynamics that would otherwise pass unobserved. COLONEL
focuses on mental and physical "mobility", a term he represents
personally by adopting multiple identities as a professional tourist
and a "funny sociologist". In his "Moving exhibitions", he infiltrates
the given context in a guerilla-like way, creating his works out
of interactions with the surroundings. At the ART FORUM BERLIN he
participates with a performance on the 25th of September, to be
shown together with earlier works in the form of a video during
the fair. Another series of works by COLONEL to be seen at the ART
FORUM BERLIN are his "Visual statistics". Using samples from daily
newspapers, COLONEL examines the iconography of the media. By extracting
images from their former context, the global power of the visual
is reflected. COLONEL's site or discourse specific interventions
have regularly figured as media infiltration, most recently as brief
episodes or social performances shown on DR2, one of the public
Danish television channels.
KARL HOLMQVIST contributes to the current art discourse,
both through his performances and his writings. Making quotes like
"NO to competition and divisions. YES to more for all", he points
out the problems of the exclusiveness of commercial galleries. HOLMQVIST's
thinking links to Sparwasser's inclusive practice, giving more people
more space. KARL HOLMQVIST compares Sparwasser to an organic structure,
like the plant he places in the stand, growing naturally, not following
rules or premises. At the ART FORUM BERLIN our aim is to continue
the Sparwasser work in new surroundings by creating a room for people
to express and exchange their opinions. Sparwasser's project and
the actions of the participating artists will evolve from a discursive
table, involving a reference library created in collaboration with
KARL HOLMQVIST. At the discursive table we present a program of
different topics, inviting the public to meet artists linked to
the Sparwasser network.
The artists are friendly supported by Danish Contemporary Art Foundation,
International Artists´ Studio Program in Sweden, Nordic Institute
for Contemporary Art
