The leisure club MOGADISHNI is pleased to announce the first solo
exhibition of Tor-Magnus Lundeby in Denmark. Lundeby will present
two installations in the exhibition which is intitled A different
state of 808 island.
The imagination prevailing in Tor-Magnus Lundeby's visual world
is wide-ranging and motifs can be derived from such disparate sources
as TV games and astronomy. He also oscillates between figuration
and non-figuration as, for example, when he has Star Wars meet Skansen's
terrarium.
The titles are often borrowed from song titles and record jackets.
The technique of using brush pens and compasses harks back to a
boy's room. The aesthetic, in fact, recalls Tor-Magnus Lundeby`s
own childhood during the late '60s and early '70s in its colourfulness
and decorative clarity, hedonism and escapism.
One of his large marker drawings, Monstropolis from 1998,
looks from a distance like a monster's face, but closer up is revealed
to be a detailed map of a gigantic city.
Although Tor-Magnus Lundeby's perspective often seems to be from
outer space, his paintings have elements of private, inner pictures.
- "I love inventing sites. They mainly appear in paintings
and drawings as pure imaginative sketches and views, sometimes more
detailed like an architect's plan drawing or some construction of
an engineer on acid (prof. Balthazar). Other times they are more
ambient like a view from above or of the sky. Music can be such
a trigger for these imaginations, and I have so far, in titles,
related a lot of my works to the widely including electronic music
genre. Later on I have used more nature linking titles though they
are often spiced with more text samples from the electronic music
menu. The closest I've been to making a real site, is the site specific
show at Moderna Museet Projekt (MMP) in Stockholm early 2000. Loony
in the Sky with DJs - extended remix installation is the title
of a fictive visual record shop dedicated the DJ-culture. The installation
was a remix compilation of an earlier painting called Loony in
the Sky with DJs. The different parts / tracks varied more or
less from the original painting, which also was included in the
space."
