Gillion Grantsaan is a young artist from Surinam, south America,
raised and educated in Holland but based in Copenhagen. Grantsaan
wishes to link his ancestral culture with the european culture.
He wants to make art which communicates across borders and cultural
background and points back to his roots and forward in relation
to a classic, Western European avantgarde notion. Gillion Grantsaan
works in different media such as collage, photography, drawing,
and installation. In his installations he often creates sculptural
constructions in wood which partly changes the structure of the
room.
Grantsaan produces images that expose his political ideas and at
the same time are cutting edge as he writes in his text, Negative
Choise?. He continues: "All I want to say is that if I die
famous without taking up the whole quest, they will print calendars,
agendas and napkins with my most famous images and turn me into
dutch folklore, erasing my skin colour, history, and battle. They
will neutralize me. Dream A’ and C’ must keep me awake and away
from this nightmare and keep me on the righteous path of freedom,
justice, and fame." (Quote from NEGATIVE CHOISE?, 2001)
We welcome you in the gallery.
