The six very different artists Jes Brinch,
Khaled Ramadan, Marco Evaritti, Diether Buchart
and Simone Aaberg Kærn have created a spectacular venue
with the exhibition Terror-isme, interesting on both a visual level
as well as on the level of content. Artist Melou Vangaard visited
the exhibition at Gallery Christian Dam. Photo and text: Melou
Vangaard.
A view of the exhibition
The windows of the gallery are painted black and written across
them in bright orange paint are the words: "War against terrorism"
and "Kill the poor". Inside, behind the door is the work
of Jes Brinch and Khaled Ramadan, including an ear-shattering sound
collage where America's president Bush speaks of waging a war against
terrorism and the need for rearmament. The tone is enervating and
increases in strength as it is mixed with the sound of Arabic verse.
Khaled Ramadan - Toys, bread and glass containers are no
longer innocent things, but here take part in the work of art as
the material that hides bullet cartridges and weapons.
Jes Brinch has thrown paint bombs of black paint at the
walls, and written slogans in English next to their Arabic translations:
"Kill power, kill tradition, kill authority, kill money, kill
status, kill hierarchy, kill society, kill ego".
Marco Evaristti has stacked chemicals from every day life
into shelves - explosive when mixed.
Ian Charlesworth's small polished images reveal names of
Irish revolutionary organization burned into wood.
Dieter Buchart has created a space for dilemma. A small
cell box is placed in the middle of the room. One can enter the
box through a thick cloth. It is warm in there, and a naked bulb
provides lighting. In the middle stand a pot with a single stinging
nettle growing in it, and next to it hangs a pair of scissors.
Simone Aaberg Kærn asks: "What are you going
to do?". Sounds of muffled singing emanate from Simone Aaberg
Kærn´s video. I recognise the Danish national anthem
and the German hymn: "Horst wessel song", which was forbidden
after World War 2 and still is. In the video you see images recorded
by a film camera attached to a model helicopter passing through
the latent dormancy of a Danish suburb mixed with short film clips
from the War.
