Frederico's first comment to me is that he really does not want
to talk about his work as such, because he wants it to stand on
its own. In this discussion Frederico prefers to share his thoughts
about the city, spaces, time, electricity and hope with me.
It is however worth mentioning that Frederico has put interesting
information about the project as a whole in the archive box at the
gallery in Ovengaden.

The Urban Space
The main themes of Frederico's work deals with 'the flow' and 'empty'
or 'disused' spaces in the city. He is interested in modern areas,
planned for something to happen, areas that are in a crisis at the
moment, left with no activity. The "sleep walk" is a big sign projected
onto an industrial wall, in a town corner that looks very new. The
square is quiet, by contrast to the street just around the corner
(Købmagergade), it is well planned and apparently meant to be an
active space. By adding his piece to that specific setting he wants
to actually make it an active space in the heads of the passer-by.

Light and electricity
Frederico describes the projection as a cinematic piece between
fiction and a 'real thing' that will stay there for some weeks,
and it is meant to deal with the consciousness of the people. The
mysteries of electricity as an important factor in our lives has
been on his mind for a while, and the light from the projector in
this sense is yet another light-input in our lives.
- As he points out, all cities are so full of light, of dreams and
of abstract things that electricity feeds, such as billboards. To
Frederico those abstract things are both non-concrete and potential
as factors in our lives.

During the discussion I realize that not only has commercial industry
actually taken over many public spaces in Copenhagen, it has even
captured and almost monopolized a wide range of visual codes. Well,
that explains why the projection somehow gave the impression of
a commercial piece by first gaze. But then again it does not change
image, point at any specific labels or try to tell me what to do
or buy. It is a quiet piece, talking to my imagination. The words
"Sleep Walk" just stands there on the billboard-shaped wall, and
reminds me that 'sleep walkers' is something advertisement wants
us to be.

Time and changes
Philosophy and cultural theory fascinate Frederico. The theory that
speed is an element that builds the new laws of our society and
cities was an opening. He mentions that Gilles Deleuze talk of a
special type of root, which has 'no structure' in biological terms,
as it grows in all directions, as an unpredictable ever-growing
network, a mechanism of change. To Frederico this symbolizes a new
way of imagining or understanding non-concrete aspects of our society,
and phenomenon's such as the internet, city life and capitalism
are quite convincing examples of this aspect of reality.
- But at the same time Frederico stress that those abstract thoughts
should be broken down and materialized, to avoid things from blurring,
to make it possible to embody them.
Frederico's projection is a night piece, dealing with the potential
of the city life at nighttime, encountering a special audience at
a time with less light and more sleeping. This time factor was the
starting point of his work, and he hopes that this piece, a materialized
set of thoughts, will work this way; grow in all directions and
(make) change.
