Badbc, Montana and Neon.
It was in 1983 that I first met Skki and JayOne. They were painting
on a Sunday afternoon on boards outside the Louvre Museum. These
boards were there while the museum’s façade was being
renovated. At that time, this location was the wall of fame for
the few graffiti writers active in Paris.
I had started spraying some months before that
encounter, and on observing them I could see that they were having
problems with their technique so I offered to help on the realization
of their piece.
I don’t remember the next time we met, but
eventually, some time later, they asked me to join the group Badbc.
Now, 20 years later, we have developed ourselves
as individual, established artists but Badbc still exists. We try
to collaborate on projects whenever we get the chance. The exhibition
Objective Subjective is our latest collaboration.
With it, we worked on the relationship between illegal
street art and advertising. We reflected on the connection between
the idea of writing your name all over town, and the invasion by
colorful ads of the cityscape… We wanted to symbolize these
two worlds, so we shaped neon lights in a graffiti pictorial aspect.
To support the neon light messages, we used the
renowned units devised by the Danish furniture designer Peter Lassen.
This outdoor installation became a collaboration between Badbc and
Peter Lassen. We arranged the Montana units so that they represented
modern suburban architecture. The Montana units are similar to this
architecture because they use space in the most logical and most
efficient way. Peter Lassen multiplied the original triangle design
by six. This formed a star with six doors giving a total length
of 22 meters.
