From the press release:
The exhibition Second Hand presents nine Danish and foreign artists, who all work with recycling in the tradition of the readymade. The carefully selected pieces in the show rearrange old photographs, movies or magazines. Old pictures are used to create new images, but the new images still recall old days. The artists are not necessarily updating their material. They are most often rather insisting upon and investigating the recycled images’ own time and period. The artists represent an archaeological approach to the past. They reenact the past through distorting, manipulating or cutting up images and combining them in new ways.
Although the methods might seem grossly manipulative, there is an inherent respect for the historical material as opposed to postmodern sampling. Second Hand is recycling against oblivion with a nostalgic bend to it. The art works on display seem strangely musty and outdated, and reminds one of the smell of old dusty garments from a second-hand store before they enter the washing machine.
