Det skæve, det sørgelige, det komiske og det ganske ordinære i livet udgør inspirationen for den amerikanske kunstner Chris Johanson, der i øjeblikket udstiller på Galleri Nicolai Wallner. Særligt den stærke koncentration af subkulturer og andre afvigere i byen San Francisco har været afsæt for størstedelen af kunstnerens virke.

På den retrospektive udstilling 1991 – 2010. I was there vil man kunne opleve mere end hundrede tegninger fra Johansons egen private samling. Med sin naivistiske streg registrerer han eksistentielle temaer, der appellerer bredt – eksempelvis selvbedrag, fremmedgørelse, svig og monotoni – ofte medfølgende en bittersød tekst som kommentar.

På trods af udstillingens tilbageskuende karakter er den ikke opstillet i kronologisk orden, men fremstår som en rejse igennem forskellige temaer og motiver, der har speciel betydning for kunstneren. Med Johansons filosofi om, at det er livet, der skaber kunstneren, og ikke omvendt, er det ikke underligt, at nogle af overskrifterne lyder Life on the streets, People and their relations og Individual versus group.

I mange år tog Chris Johanson aktiv del i den californiske punk/skatescene, hvilket både spejles i værkernes tydelige street art æstetik, men også i hans ligefremme og rå portrættering af livet og dem, der lever det.

Chris Johanson (f. 1968) bor og arbejder i Portland, Oregon. Hans udstillinger tæller blandt andre Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art i San Diego og Museum of Modern Art i New York. Hans fik sit store internationale gennembrud, da han i 2002 udstillede på Whitney Biennalen.
